Tests and Exams
Please notify Ms. Thomas of any accommodations or modifications in advance of any assessment so that I can best support your learning.
Quizzes:
Given about once per unit. Quizzes should give you a sense of your progress and understanding of the material as we move towards tests and exams. As a result, quizzes are not weighted according to the IB scale. FYI: These are not the same as our Daily Quizzes.
Retakes:
You may retake a quiz if you scored below 70%. A successful retake can result in a score up to 80% and must be done in person.
Procedure:
*Retake requests must be completed by signing up for slot through the Canvas appointment feature. Your time is valuable, as is mine. If you need to reschedule, you must do so through the Canvas appointment feature at least 1 hour before the appointment time. For example, if your appointment is at lunch, you need to cancel or reschedule by 11 am. If you miss your appointment, you forfeit your opportunity to retake the quiz. If you miss two appointments, you forfeit all future opportunities to retake quizzes.
Tests:
Tests will happen once a semester and are cumulative, like a midterm. Tests will be formatted like the IB exam in order to prepare you for the style and types of questions that will be asked.
Once graded, your raw score will be weighted according to IB grade boundaries and entered into the Formal Assessment category in the gradebook.
Exams:
Exams happen once a semester and will consist of a modified IB exam (Papers 1, 2, and 3). This will be cumulative of all subject matter learned so far from Year 1 and Year 2. As with the official IB exam, you will be expected to sit for the exam on the day(s) it is administered and there will be no make-ups provided after the fact.
Fall Semester:
The fall exam will consist of Paper 1 and 2. This will take place over multiple class periods and may include portions of Study Week as well as Finals Week. The schedule for the final will be released closer to the end of the semester.
Spring Semester:
The spring exam will be administered in April and will consist of all Papers. Similar to the fall exam, it will be cumulative and take place over multiple class periods. Plan to spend approximately one week of class time on this exam. The schedule for this final will be released as early as possible to minimize conflict with college and spring break trips.

Procedure:
- Sign up for a retake appointment slot*
- Study your quiz and the content(collaborative study is encouraged!)
- At your appointment time, bring your original quiz and a few sheets of lined paper.
- For each question, you will need to write WHY your original answer was incorrect and WHAT a more correct answer would be. Your responses should be thoughtful and at least 4 sentences each or 2 sentences and a diagram. (ex. "I thought the answer was punctuated equilibrium because I misunderstood the definition and was not looking at the fossil record correctly. After studying with a friend, I realized that it must be gradualism. Gradualism also makes more sense for this cladogram because...")
- Turn in your quiz with the retake stapled to the front.
